Rotary’s first-ever project
Transcript :
When it began in 1905, the new Chicago Club had no clearly defined plans other than bringing together representatives of various professions.
Paul HARRIS accepted the presidency of the Club for its 3rd year with the aim of committing it to the path of selfless service to the community with a firm hand .
He organized a round table inviting about twenty organizations including several business clubs.
A commission examined the social problems of the city.
It became aware that men were led to enter drinking establishments to satisfy their natural needs, thus leading to the consumption of drinks, most often alcoholic.
Women, on the other hand, were forced to frequent department stores, with the temptation to make superfluous purchases.
It was therefore decided at the end of 1907 to build public toilets.
This is the first of Rotary’s countless public service projects.
